MacKenzie Scott, Divorced from Jeff Bezos
Donates 15.8 Trillion Won to 1,253 Nonprofit Organizations
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] According to the AP News on the 24th (local time), MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon in the United States, has donated more than $1.5 billion (about 1.9 trillion KRW) to approximately 30 nonprofit organizations since the beginning of the year.
The most recent donation by Scott was to "Big Brothers Big Sisters," a U.S.-based mentoring charity for youth. The organization announced that it received $122.6 million (about 155 billion KRW) from Scott on that day. The organization stated, "There are 30,000 youths waiting to receive mentoring," and added, "This donation will enable us to provide mentoring services to more people."
Scott divorced Bezos in 2019 due to his infidelity and received 4% of Amazon's shares as a settlement, which she pledged to donate mostly. Since then, AP reported that from 2020, the total amount donated to at least 1,253 nonprofit organizations has reached $12.5 billion (about 15.8 trillion KRW). In March, the nonprofit organizations Habitat and Planned Parenthood (PP) announced that they received $436 million (about 551.2 billion KRW) and $275 million (about 347.6 billion KRW) respectively from Scott.
The U.S. daily The New York Times (NYT) also reported in March, citing Forbes estimates, that despite the large donations, Scott's fortune still amounts to $49.4 billion (about 62.4 trillion KRW).
Forbes selected MacKenzie Scott as the most influential woman in the world in 2021. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor who held the top spot for 10 consecutive years from 2011 to last year, was not included in the ranking. Forbes annually selects and announces the 100 most influential women in the world.
