Garden experts trained through community education... Voluntary flower guardians during the festival period

[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] On the 22nd, Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that Yellow City citizen gardeners are drawing attention by volunteering as flower guardians during the ‘Jangseong Hwangryonggang (洪) Gildongmu Flower Road Festival.’
This festival is a representative spring event of Jangseong that combines the 30-year history of the Hong Gildong Festival with 1 billion flowers of Hwangryonggang.
This year’s festival is held for 10 days from the 20th to the 29th along the Hwangryonggang area. Small-scale performances, exhibitions, and various experiential events are expected to attract many visitors.
The main attraction of the festival is the spring flowers that beautifully decorate the riverside. Colorful flowers such as golden trumpet (Geumyeonghwa), yellow iris (Norangkkotchangpo), and poppies (Kkotyanggwibi) adorn the surroundings of Hwangryonggang.
When tourists flock, many people take photos along the riverside paths, which could potentially damage the flower beds. Therefore, Yellow City citizen gardeners voluntarily participate in flower protection volunteer activities during the festival period.
The managed sections include areas expected to attract large crowds, such as from Jangan Bridge to the entrance of Hwangmir Land and below the Healing Herb Garden, as well as from Munhwa Bridge to Seosam Rose Tunnel.
They are responsible for guiding visitors not to enter the gardens or pick the flowers. They also carefully manage the point gardens made up of delicate flowers.
Yellow City citizen gardeners are landscaping experts who professionally manage village gardens located throughout Jangseong. Since 2020, Jangseong-gun has been operating the ‘Yellow City Citizen Gardener Training Course,’ which provides local residents with professional education opportunities for garden creation.
As a result, 43 experts graduated from the first course and 28 from the second. Upon completion of the third course this year, the goal of nurturing 100 citizen gardeners will be achieved.
So far, citizen gardeners have actively participated in Jangseong-gun’s landscaping activities, such as creating roadside landscapes and Hwangryonggang point gardens. This time, they started managing flowers early by visiting the site from the 14th, a week before the festival opening day.
Kim, a Yellow City citizen gardener, said, “I participate in volunteering with a heart to give back to Jangseong-gun, which supported me to receive garden management education,” and urged, “Please enjoy the Hwangryonggang spring flowers with your eyes only and be especially careful not to enter the flower beds.”
