[Asia Economy Reporters Naju-seok and Oh Ju-yeon] Park Hong-geun, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, proposed on the 17th to expand the National Assembly's Special Committee on Political Reform (Jeonggae Special Committee) into a constitutional amendment special committee.
Park made this proposal at the floor leaders' meeting held at the National Assembly on the same day.
He stated, "President Yoon Seok-yeol and many members of the People Power Party will attend the May 18 Democratic Movement memorial ceremony," adding, "During his candidacy, President Yoon said that the spirit of May 18 upheld the spirit of the Constitution and that it should be included in the preamble of the Constitution during the amendment." He continued, "To open a new chapter in history, sincerity must be proven through action," and proposed to the ruling party, "I suggest expanding the National Assembly's Jeonggae Special Committee soon and reorganizing it as a constitutional special committee."
Park also said, "Not only the Democratic Party but also the People Power Party's party platforms include content about continuing modern democratic movements such as April 19, May 18, and June 10," and expressed hope that "in the second half of the National Assembly, they will show sincerity by agreeing to form the special committee without conditions."
He also conveyed concerns about the possible appointments of Han Dong-hoon as Minister of Justice and Kim Hyun-sook as Minister of Gender Equality and Family.
He said, "Yesterday, in the policy speech, it was said that major issues in the National Assembly would be discussed, but I ask whether changing the promise in just one day is parliamentary democracy," and added, "The Democratic Party can never agree to forced appointments." Park stated, "The Democratic Party has declared maximum cooperation on livelihood and security issues such as the supplementary budget for complete compensation for losses and humanitarian aid due to North Korea's COVID-19 situation," and strongly urged once again, "We strongly call for the withdrawal of the nominations of unqualified figures such as Han Dong-hoon and Kim Hyun-sook, who, along with Jeong Ho-young, have acted as bombs of national conflict."
