[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Kim Dong-yeon, the Democratic Party candidate for Governor of Gyeonggi Province, revealed his plan to develop northern Gyeonggi into a 'Special Autonomous Province' like Jeju Island and Sejong City.

Candidate Kim aims not only to divide Gyeonggi Province into north and south but also to promote northern Gyeonggi as a 'Special Autonomous Province' to resolve regional imbalances.

He plans to promptly form a special task force within his campaign, complete a referendum to gauge residents' opinions within this year, and if elected governor, achieve the establishment of the Special Autonomous Province during his term.

On the 15th, Candidate Kim held an urgent press conference on northern Gyeonggi issues at the Gyeonggi Peace Plaza in front of the Northern Government Complex of Gyeonggi Province, stating, "The sacrifices northern Gyeonggi has made for South Korea must now be recognized, and the central government should provide special support and grant special autonomy, making it a 'Special Autonomous Province.'"

He added, "The special committee will include Democratic Party members of the National Assembly from northern Gyeonggi, candidates for basic local government heads from each city and county, private leaders, and some figures from southern Gyeonggi."

He emphasized, "In a public opinion survey of all Gyeonggi residents, support for establishing northern Gyeonggi Province is high. Support among northern Gyeonggi residents is more than twice that of opposition, and nearly 70% of residents in border areas support it."

Candidate Kim also announced plans to actively invest in transportation and infrastructure in northern Gyeonggi and, in the mid to long term, establish a 'Cultural Content Economic Special Zone' during his term.

He intends to secure deregulation and special financial support from the central government and push for related legal amendments and the enactment of special laws.

He promised, "Areas in northern Gyeonggi with distinctive cultural content, including the DMZ, Hallyu (Korean Wave), or drone specialization in Yeoncheon and Pocheon, will be designated as 'Cultural Content Special Zones.'"

Especially, "we will develop tailored development strategies suitable for each northern region together with residents, private opinion leaders, and experts."

Candidate Kim pledged, "In the upcoming era of peaceful coexistence, northern Gyeonggi will become the heart of South Korea's peace policy and economic growth. I will devote all my efforts to unlocking northern Gyeonggi's potential to drive the development of the entire Gyeonggi Province and become the center of South Korea's future transformation."

Meanwhile, on the same day, Candidate Kim toured northern Gyeonggi, including Uijeongbu City, meeting residents directly to communicate and appeal for support.
