[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Jang Sang-yoon, the Deputy Minister leading the Ministry of Education while the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education remains vacant, mentioned the transition of the public education system on the 10th, stating, "For society to clearly recognize the flow of change, education must change first."
With the resignation of Kim In-cheol, the nominee for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Ministry of Education began the first day of the new government under the acting leadership of Deputy Minister Jang.
On the 10th, at the inauguration ceremony held at the Government Complex Sejong, Deputy Minister Jang said, "In the absence of the Deputy Prime Minister, I bear a heavy responsibility as I take the Ministry of Education's first new step," adding, "I am aware of the public's expectations and hopes for educational innovation, and I have a stronger will than ever to lead the new government's education policy without hesitation or gaps."
Deputy Minister Jang emphasized 'reform and flexibility' for the Ministry of Education. He explained, "We must boldly discard what needs to be discarded, actively respond to what needs reform, and respond flexibly and collaboratively to become a competent ministry," and added, "I will devote all my efforts to transforming and advancing education so that the public's regrets and criticisms can turn into affection and support."
He stressed, "We must prioritize nurturing future talents through creative education," and said, "I will lead the overall transition of the public education system so that children can develop their individual talents and aptitudes and grow into mature citizens."
Deputy Minister Jang stated, "To support the new education system, we will improve the educational environment based on digital and new technologies and provide active support to achieve innovation in curricula and teaching and learning centered on the field."
He also said, "We will establish a foundation for innovation so that universities, which are facing crises due to the sharp decline in the school-age population and regional extinction, can secure competitiveness," adding, "We will support universities to autonomously innovate by leveraging their unique characteristics and strengths, and strive to create a sustainable growth ecosystem centered on universities."
Deputy Minister Jang declared, "We will expand the base of lifelong education so that all citizens can actively respond to the future society throughout their lives," and stated, "We will work to reorganize and systematize the entire education system so that education encompasses not only school-age students but all citizens."
