[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Tourism Organization announced on the 27th that it has remodeled the tourist information centers at Daegu and Muan International Airports, the first gateways to regional tourism, as part of a local government contest project.
This project was revamped into an open space to welcome tourists arriving for the first time in over two years since COVID-19, following the resumption of international flights at regional airports from the end of April.
Previously, the space was a counter-type area where tourists could not enter freely. It has now been reorganized into areas for browsing tourist information, resting, and experiencing, allowing tourists to come and go freely and interact. Barrier-free kiosks with adjustable screen heights and sign language and Braille guidance were installed to eliminate informational barriers for vulnerable tourist groups, transforming the centers into accessible tourist information centers, the organization explained.
The Daegu International Airport tourist information center was designed based on the five colors of Daegu Metropolitan City's brand slogan, 'Colorful Daegu.' To showcase Daegu, known for smart technology and the textile industry, a Hanbok AR fitting device was installed, offering experiential content where visitors can virtually try on desired Hanbok and keep photos taken.
The Muan International Airport tourist information center was created as a photo zone with a naturalistic concept plant wall inspired by Jeollanam-do's brand slogan, 'Land of Life, Prime Jeonnam.' Through a 3D three-dimensional model map, visitors can explore 14 representative tourist sites of Jeonnam made into miniatures.
Kim Hyungjun, head of the Korea Tourism Organization's Information and Transportation Team, said, “Through this remodeling, we aimed to improve tourist accessibility and provide content that highlights regional characteristics.” He added, “We plan to promote not only regional tourism information but also the 1330 tourist information service and quality-certified accommodations provided by the organization through the airport tourist information centers.”
