[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] The Democratic Party of Korea, after holding a party caucus, has reached a consensus to pass the 'Complete Removal of Prosecutorial Investigation Rights (Geomsu Wanbak)' bill within this month. In response, Prosecutor General Kim Oh-soo has voluntarily called for a press conference.
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office announced on the 13th at 3 p.m. that Prosecutor General Kim will hold a press conference regarding the 'issues with the Geomsu Wanbak bill.' Ye Se-min, Head of the Planning and Coordination Department, and Choi Ji-seok, Officer in charge of Criminal Policy, will be present at the meeting.
On his way to work that day, Prosecutor General Kim stated, "(Geomsu Wanbak) is a direct violation of the Constitution," adding, "With a resolve of 'death before surrender' (必死卽生), I will explore all procedures and measures and do my best to appeal and request (the bill's repeal or reconsideration)."
He continued, "Since the April 19 Revolution, the Constitution has defined prosecutors as the sole agents of investigation," and argued, "If such a bill is promoted, criminals will rejoice, and crime victims and the public will have nowhere to appeal. It is truly against justice and common sense."
He said, "Fortunately, lawyer associations representing justice and common sense in our society, academia, civic groups, the media, and many citizens are pointing out the problems of the hastily pushed bill in detail," and declared, "Prosecutors, including myself, will never be discouraged or give up."
He added, "With a resolve of 'death before surrender,' I will do my utmost to appeal and request at every stage?from the National Assembly where the bill is being legislated, to the President who appointed me and holds the power to promulgate and request reconsideration of the bill, and to the Constitutional Court that judges whether the bill violates the Constitution?by exploring all procedures and measures."
