[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] ○…‘6.3 billion won’.
This is the auction of the iron set used by the ‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA) when he won four consecutive major tournaments. On the 11th (Korean time), ESPN reported, "The Titleist 681-T iron set used by Woods when he achieved the ‘Tiger Slam’ was sold for $5,156,162 (6.34 billion won) at the Golden Age auction." The product was owned by Todd Brock, a businessman from Houston, Texas, USA, who put it up for auction this time.
Brock bought it for $57,242 (70 million won) from Steve Mata, then Vice President of Titleist, who had put it up for auction in 2010, and resold it for nearly 100 times that amount. ESPN explained, "This auction price is the highest record for golf-related memorabilia," adding, "The previous record was the ‘Green Jacket’ worn by Horton Smith (USA) when he won the Masters in 1934 and 1936, which sold for $682,000 (840 million won) in 2013."
The ‘Tiger Slam’ refers to Woods’ consecutive victories in the four major tournaments from the 2000 US Open to the 2001 Masters. Although it is not a ‘Calendar Grand Slam’ where all four majors held in a single year are won, the nickname was created based on the fact that he won four majors in a row. Woods made big news by returning to the field after 14 months since his car rollover accident, finishing 47th in the recently concluded ‘Masters Tournament’.
