"North Korea's ICBM Launch Is an Unnecessary and Dangerous Provocation"
Expressing Concern Over North Korea's Human Rights Situation... "North Korea Is One of the Most Oppressive Countries in the World"
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Se-eun] The European Parliament recently adopted a resolution strongly condemning North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch. Concerns about North Korea's human rights situation are at the core of the resolution.
The European Parliament on the 7th (local time) called the ICBM launch an "unnecessary and dangerous provocation" and stated it "strongly condemns" it. The European Parliament is the legislative body of the European Union (EU).
The resolution calls for North Korea to completely, verifiably, and irreversibly dismantle (CVID) its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs.
Regarding the human rights of North Korean residents, it criticized, "North Korea is one of the most oppressive countries in the world," and stated, "It exercises control over all aspects of residents' lives, including monopolizing information and restricting residents' movements."
It continued, "We strongly condemn the state repression systematically carried out for decades by North Korea's current and former supreme leaders and leadership," and demanded that Kim Jong-un halt policies related to extermination, murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, rape, forced abortion and sexual violence, persecution based on politics, religion, ethnicity, and gender, forced relocation, disappearances, and inhumane actions related to prolonged famine."
Furthermore, it urged an end to violence against religious communities within North Korea and called for the granting of freedom of religion and belief.
Regarding excessive COVID-19 measures, it pointed out, "COVID-19 is making North Korea an even more isolated country from the outside world," and "it worsens entrenched human rights violations and negatively affects residents' health."
According to the Voice of America (VOA), the European Parliament adopted a resolution on North Korea for the first time in six years.
The European Parliament also adopted a resolution in 2016 condemning North Korea's nuclear tests and calling for the dismantlement of its nuclear missile program.
