[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Kwon Jae-hyung, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Uijeongbu from the Democratic Party of Korea, reaffirmed the cancellation of the 'Dobong Driver's License Test Center Jangam-dong Relocation Project.'
Regarding the relocation of the Dobong Driver's License Test Center to Jangam-dong, candidate Kwon stated on the 8th, "The agreement, which accepted Seoul City's undesirable facility and was satisfied with partial investment support just because the development conditions in Jangam-dong were restricted by legal regulations, is a shortsighted administration."
He added, "According to the Statistics Korea announcement, the population cliff is advancing, and by 2070, South Korea's population will be in the 37 million range. The population obtaining driver's licenses will also decrease, so in the mid to long term, the driver's license test center will not have significant economic effects."
He further argued, "Now, artificial intelligence (AI) dominates all industries and living spaces. With the advent of an era of unmanned autonomous vehicles and drone cars becoming common, existing driver's license test centers will either transform into different forms or disappear."
Earlier, Uijeongbu City signed an agreement in December last year with Seoul City and Nowon-gu, focusing on relocating the Dobong Driver's License Test Center to Jangam-dong, Uijeongbu City, titled 'Agreement on Support for Co-growth and Mutual Development.'
The agreement includes 50 billion KRW support from Seoul City to create convenience facilities for residents in the Jangam-dong area and the purchase of approximately 60% of Seoul City's shares in the Jangam Station transfer parking lot to develop the transfer parking lot.
Additionally, Uijeongbu City expected that the relocation of the test center would revitalize the surrounding commercial areas and promote regional economic development.
Candidate Kwon stated, "If elected mayor, I will prepare the optimal development policy reflecting the conditions of the transportation hub Jangam-dong area and Uijeongbu City's long-term vision, along with terminating the existing agreement through a public discussion process that gathers citizens' opinions."
