[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, will launch a community radio station 'YeonsuFM' (98.7 MHz), a local media-oriented community radio broadcast, in August.
Since being selected last year as a new community radio project site by the Korea Communications Commission, Yeonsu-gu has signed a business agreement with the Yeonsu Community Radio Social Cooperative to revitalize village broadcasting and has been preparing for the launch.
YeonsuFM is an FM radio broadcast that transmits with low power under 10W across Yeonsu-gu, with residents directly participating in and producing neighborhood stories. It delivers district news and local information and also provides disaster broadcasts. Additionally, it produces and broadcasts programs for communication with local communities and vulnerable groups.
Community radio broadcasting is a project promoted by the government and local governments in response to increasing demands for media access rights, as residents' media utilization skills have improved through the recent establishment of regional media centers and support for village media, enabling residents to produce content directly.
Currently, there are 20 locations nationwide, including 3 in Seoul, 5 in Gyeonggi, and 3 in Gyeongbuk, where community radio licensed corporations are being promoted or have launched. In Incheon, YeonsuFM in Yeonsu-gu and IncheonFM in Seo-gu were newly added last year.
Meanwhile, since last year, Yeonsu-gu has been operating a smart mobile studio, a broadcast vehicle capable of real-time broadcasting and relay, and is also constructing a village studio that combines a resident community space and media.
The facility will include two visible radio studios capable of main studio functions, talk and main content production, and video transmission, as well as an editing room, office space, and a resident community space.
The district plans to use community radio as a platform to produce locally focused content and to provide experiential education for youth.
Gonam-seok, Mayor of Yeonsu-gu, said, "After a trial broadcast of YeonsuFM throughout July, we will officially launch it in August. Community radio is a terrestrial radio station made and operated by residents, and we expect it to become a successful win-win model created through public-private cooperation."
