On the 27th (local time), CNN cited the Russian NGO OVD-Info, reporting that Russian authorities have detained a total of 5,794 people nationwide for participating in anti-war protests.
Since the invasion of Ukraine began on the 24th, anti-war protests have been taking place in major cities including the capital Moscow and the second-largest city Saint Petersburg.
According to current Russian law, large-scale protests require protesters to apply for permission, and the application must be submitted at least 10 days before the event, starting from 15 days prior. Those who protest without permission face heavy fines or imprisonment, and in some cases, imprisonment may be imposed. Individuals may hold solo protests called 'single pickets,' but detentions related to these are unprecedented.
Earlier, the Russian Investigative Committee warned that participating in anti-war protests is illegal. It also emphasized that the activities of protest participants are recorded as crimes, stating, "It can leave a mark on that person's future."
