President Moon: "I Hope Korea-EU Digital Cooperation Grows Even Stronger"

Adoption of Korea-EU General Personal Data Protection Law Adequacy Decision... Selected as the Third Country after the UK and Japan

[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in stated in a message posted on social networking service (SNS) on the 17th, "I hope that digital cooperation between Korea and the EU will become even stronger."

President Moon explained, "After five years of consultations, today the Korea-EU adequacy decision under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was adopted. This system approves the transfer of personal data overseas to countries with a level of personal data protection equivalent to that of the EU. Following the UK and Japan, our country has been selected as the third country."

President Moon evaluated, "Until now, our companies had to enter into separate standard contracts to transfer EU citizens' personal data domestically, which required a lot of time and effort. However, with this decision, various information can be transferred and utilized domestically more smoothly."

President Moon said, "I thank President von der Leyen for supporting the completion of the decision within this year following discussions in Rome last October."
