China: "If the US diplomatically boycotts the Beijing Olympics, we will take countermeasures"

The Chinese government has maintained the position that "the Olympics are a celebration for athletes and opposes the politicization of sports."

According to major foreign media on the 6th, Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, warned, "Stop the politicization of sports and cease the so-called 'diplomatic boycott' of the Beijing Winter Olympics," adding, "It is necessary to ensure that it does not affect dialogue and cooperation in important areas of China-US relations." He emphasized, "If the United States acts unilaterally, China will resolutely take countermeasures."

It is known that US President Joe Biden is considering a diplomatic boycott regarding attendance at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in China. While American athletes are expected to participate as planned, political figures are reportedly not attending.

Meanwhile, according to US foreign media, the United States is expected to officially announce its decision on the diplomatic boycott within this week.
