The Novel '82nyeonsaeng Kim Ji-young' to Be Adapted into a Play Next August


[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] The novel "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" by author Cho Nam-joo, which was published in 2016 and sold over 1.3 million copies domestically, is being adapted into a play.


The production company Spotlight announced on the 3rd that the play "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" will be performed at Baekam Art Hall in Samseong-dong, Seoul, from August to November 2022.


The original novel "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" has sold rights to 20 countries overseas, including the United States, Japan, and Germany, delivering a powerful message not only to Korean society but also to the contemporary global audience. TIME magazine selected this book as one of the "100 Must-Read Books of 2020." Based on the popularity of the original novel, the film of the same name released in October 2019 attracted 3.67 million viewers domestically.


The work to adapt the novel for the stage began with creative producer Jung Yoo-ran, CEO of Culture Icon. The direction is handled by Ahn Kyung-mo, who has expressed his unique artistic vision through various forms. Known for presenting profound works across genres, he recently won the 23rd Kim Sang-ryeol Theater Award for the play "Sweat." The adaptation involves writer Kim Ga-ram, who received the Best Work Award at the 4th Korean Musical Awards for the musical "Arangga."


Producer Park Sung-yoon said, "We have completed script development in collaboration with producer Jung Yoo-ran, director Ahn Kyung-mo, and writer Kim Ga-ram," adding, "Casting and internal workshops will take place within the year, followed by full-scale design development in the first half of next year, before meeting the audience."
