[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] LG Electronics recently announced on the 2nd that it has signed a global patent license agreement with Tinno, a Chinese company and parent company of the European mobile phone maker Wiko, regarding 'LTE communication standard patents,' and agreed to withdraw the ongoing lawsuit against Wiko in Germany as of the 29th of last month. Through this agreement, patent royalties for Wiko's LTE phones sold in the global market over the coming years will be paid to LG Electronics.
In 2018, LG Electronics filed a lawsuit at the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany against Wiko for patent infringement injunctions related to three LTE communication standard patents and won all three cases in 2019. LG also won the appeal filed by Wiko, leading to a settlement just three days before the sales ban trial in Germany.
Earlier this year, LG Electronics also won lawsuits against the Chinese mobile phone manufacturer TCL at the Mannheim and D?sseldorf Regional Courts in Germany, securing not only patent infringement injunctions but also rulings for the recall, disposal, and sales ban of products already sold in Germany. This was the result of LG filing lawsuits against TCL in 2019 concerning three LTE communication standard patents.
LG Electronics continues its research activities in the 6G mobile communication field, expected to be commercialized around 2029. After establishing the 'LG-KAIST 6G Research Center' in partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 2019, LG has strengthened collaboration with Keysight, a global wireless communication test and measurement equipment manufacturer, earlier this year to accelerate securing core 6G fundamental technologies. In August, LG successfully transmitted communication signals over a straight-line distance of more than 100 meters outdoors using the 6G terahertz band in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.
Joo Hwi-jae, Head of LG Electronics Patent Center (Executive Director), emphasized, “Through consecutive lawsuit victories in Germany and this agreement, the value of our massive investment and relentless efforts in technological innovation has been recognized,” adding, “We will strictly respond to unauthorized use of patents and ensure that innovative technology products spread in the market through various activities that recognize the value of LG Electronics’ patents.”
