[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized the apology made by Lee Soon-ja, the wife of the late former President Jeon Du-hwan, at his funeral on the 27th, calling it "a statement mocking the citizens of Gwangju and the people even at the last moment."

After holding a meeting with farmers in Gangjin, Jeollanam-do on the same day, Lee told reporters, "Looking at it from all sides, it's hard to tell whether it was an apology or not."

Earlier, Lee Soon-ja said, "I would like to deeply apologize on behalf of my husband to those who suffered pain and wounds during his tenure." Jeon’s side, represented by former Blue House secretary Min Jeong-gi, clarified that this was not a reference to the May 18 Gwangju Uprising.

Lee countered, "The biggest issue with Jeon Du-hwan is not his actions during his tenure, but rather the so-called coup and massacre that occurred during the process of his tenure."
