[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Trainee Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The ‘ARRA’ team from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Systems Engineering at Pukyong National University won the top prize, the Grand Prize, at the 30th Student Ship Design Contest.
The team participated in the designated task category to design a ‘63,000 DWT bulk carrier’ at this competition hosted by the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, earning recognition as the most outstanding team among universities nationwide.
They designed the bulk carrier to install various systems, including an LNG fuel gas supply system, to reduce carbon emissions and meet the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) when passing through the European ECA (Emission Control Area) region.
The ship they designed is equipped with an Energy Saving Device (ESD) and meets the EEDI Phase 3, the third stage of the energy efficiency index, which will be enforced starting in 2025. Even after delivery, the shipowner can avoid processes such as power limitation or retrofitting, making it economically advantageous from the shipowner’s perspective.
They also participated in the contest’s free task category and won the second prize, the Excellence Award, for their ‘Smart Ship Design Capable of Autonomous Navigation.’
They designed a large vessel autonomous navigation system that can operate remotely or autonomously without crew, detailing how the control center or artificial intelligence perceives, judges, and controls the system according to different situations.
