[Asia Economy Reporter Joesulgina] The Personal Information Protection Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency announced on the 15th that starting from 10 a.m. on the 16th, they will launch the 'Find My Leaked Information Service' that allows individuals to check whether their personal information has been leaked.
This service notifies users if their account information (ID and password) used online has been leaked when entered. It enhances security by applying two-step user authentication and allows checking up to five account information using a single email account.
The Personal Information Protection Commission enables users to verify leaks by utilizing 23 million domestic account information records illegally distributed on the dark web and Google's password checkup service (over 4 billion records).
If users confirm a leak through the inquiry, they can change their password following the 'Safe Password Selection and Usage Guide' menu within the Find My Information service. Alternatively, if the relevant site offers a secondary authentication service such as 'mobile phone verification code application,' users can apply it to prevent further damage.
Additionally, to withdraw membership from unused websites, users can delete their account information using the ‘e-Privacy Clean Service.’ The Personal Information Protection Commission urged users to use the Find My Information service to prevent further leak damage from spreading, noting that illegally distributed account information can be exploited for various crimes such as identity theft and voice phishing, leading to secondary damage.
Song Sanghoon, Director of the Investigation and Coordination Bureau at the Personal Information Protection Commission, stated, "We will continue efforts to expand the scope of verification by adding illegally distributed information such as 'email addresses and phone numbers' through cooperation with related organizations," and added, "We encourage the public to actively use the service to prevent additional harm."
