[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with Park Yong-jin, a lawmaker who competed with him during the primary, to unite as one team for victory in next year's presidential election.
On the 28th, Lee met Park for a luncheon at a restaurant in Yeouido, Seoul, where they discussed Park's joining the Democratic Party's election campaign committee and his role. Lee said, "I should have met Park sooner, but with the national audit and various other matters, it was delayed." Park likened the presidential race to soccer, emphasizing the importance of approaching the election as one team. He said, "In soccer, even the universe's strongest star players can lose to the weakest teams on the outskirts," adding, "There are many cases where individual play ruins the game." He continued, "We need to build good team play," explaining, "I believe that candidates who participated in the party and primary together should unite around candidate Lee to lead the election to victory through teamwork."
Lee agreed, saying, "Park said we need to use the field widely," and responded, "Both personnel and policies should be viewed broadly and expansively. Even when digging a well, digging wide allows for digging deep; digging narrowly leads to quick limits."
The two continued discussions about their roles in the campaign committee. Park stated, "I will take on the role of a frontline striker contributing to social integration and appealing to centrists," and indicated his plan to actively support the election by saying, "I will discuss youth and future agendas to focus energy around the candidate." Lee said, "Since everyone is taking on national tasks, let's put aside personal interests and prioritize the public good together," adding, "Of course, you will join the campaign committee, and since generational change and young politics are important tasks, let's create possible roles accordingly."
