[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City announced on the 26th that it will conduct a preference survey from the 26th to next month 1st to select the design for the Urban Railway Line 2 tram.
The preference survey will be conducted both online and offline to select the exterior design of the tram vehicles. The exterior designs are divided into three themes.
Plan 1 is designed to resemble an astronaut helmet aiming for aerospace, Plan 2 is designed to resemble magnolia petals in full bloom, the city’s flower, and Plan 3 is designed to resemble a magpie, the city’s bird, flying into the sky.
So far, most urban railway designs applied domestically have depended on vehicle manufacturers. The ordering agency’s requirements are partially reflected in the manufacturers’ proposed models.
However, the Daejeon tram design was separately selected and derived through a design company headquartered in Germany, which has extensive experience in tram designs.
Additionally, the city’s plan is to finalize the tram exterior design by collecting citizens’ opinions based on the designs derived by the company.
The city plans to apply colors to the vehicle design selected in the survey, conduct an additional second survey next month to complete the exterior design, and finalize the design by the end of December after public design review.
The tram vehicle citizen preference survey will be conducted both on the city’s website and on-site. The on-site survey will take place from the 26th to the 29th at the DCC Science Festival venue, Daejeon Station, Urban Railway Line 1’s City Hall Station, Government Complex Station, Yuseong Hot Springs Station, the Complex Terminal, Euneungjeongi Street, Daejeon City Hall, and other densely populated areas where many citizens gather.
Jeon Jae-hyun, head of the Daejeon Tram Metropolitan Headquarters, said, “We will select the tram vehicle design that will carry on Daejeon’s future through the citizen preference survey,” and added, “We hope for active participation and interest from citizens in the survey.”
Meanwhile, the Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 is being promoted with the core plan to construct 37 stations and one vehicle depot along a 37.8 km extension section. The total project cost is expected to be 764.3 billion KRW.
The city aims to proceed with the design by the end of next year, start construction once the design is completed, and open the line in 2027.
