"Measures Needed Such as Termination of Illegally Used Accounts"
Domestic broadcasters and film distributors have requested telecommunications companies to take proactive measures against copyright infringement. On the 21st, led by the Digital Content Protection Committee launched in March, they urged the blocking of illegal content distribution. This organization consists of broadcasters such as KBS, MBC, and JTBC, as well as film distributors including CJ ENM, Lotte Entertainment, and Showbox. They unanimously stated, "Most illegal files are distributed immediately after a broadcast or film is released, causing significant damage to content creators," and emphasized, "Copyright must be protected through actions against users who infringe copyrights."
According to an investigation by the Korea Copyright Protection Agency, approximately 870,000 illegal copies were distributed online in the first half of the year. More than 60% of these were distributed via the file-sharing program Torrent. The Digital Content Protection Committee explained, "Although large-scale crackdowns such as site shutdowns were conducted in 2018, the fundamental problem has not been resolved," and added, "If telecommunications companies take measures such as terminating illegal user accounts, illegal torrent sites with reduced file sharing and usage will naturally follow the path of closure due to decreased revenue."
