[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A woman in her 40s who has been experiencing bleeding for three weeks after receiving Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine has reported adverse effects.

On the 18th, a petition titled "After Moderna vaccination, blood keeps flowing from my body and won't stop. I need to protect my children" was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board.

The petitioner, Ms. A, a 43-year-old woman living in Pohang, said, "I am a mother of two children and have been very healthy, not having visited a hospital even once in over 10 years." She added, "I had an appointment for the first dose of the vaccine and was informed it would be Pfizer. However, when I arrived at the hospital on September 17, I was given Moderna instead. When I said I wanted Pfizer, I was told it was a government policy and I could not choose."

About a week after vaccination, on September 25, Ms. A collapsed. She explained, "An ambulance was called, and I went to the hospital emergency room. I cried all night from pain that felt like I was going to die." The hospital said, "There was a blood clot, but even with a CT scan, the cause could not be identified. There was so much blood in the abdomen that the CT could not be properly checked. Fortunately, if the blood had gone to the brain, it would have been a cerebral hemorrhage, but the clot formed near the kidney, so it was not life-threatening. However, they said this hospital could not treat it and advised me to go to a larger university hospital in Seoul or elsewhere."

She continued, "The pain was worse than childbirth, so I went to Hospital B's emergency room, where I received narcotic painkillers to endure it. I had to take about three painkillers before the pain stopped. The hospital said, 'The blood clot is severe, causing serious inflammation in the kidney, ureter, and bladder,' and 'The platelet count is about 14 micro, and if it drops further, a transfusion will be necessary.' I asked the hospital to report this to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency since I had no underlying conditions before receiving Moderna, but no one listened," she said.

Ms. A said, "The hospital said the inflammation would improve with antibiotic treatment, so I received antibiotics for about three weeks. Currently, my inflammation markers and platelet counts are within normal ranges, but the important thing is that blood continues to flow from my body just as it did initially. They keep flushing my abdomen with saline, but the bleeding does not stop. The hospital said this case is unusual." She added, "When I called the public health center, the officials handling adverse reaction reports and hospital bills said, 'There are too many reports, so we cannot help,' and 'Only life-threatening emergencies are accepted by the Disease Control Agency.' Does a person have to die for it to be considered an emergency?"

Ms. A appealed, "I cry every night. I never imagined that the vaccine I took to survive would cause continuous bleeding from my body like this. I hope the Disease Control Agency responds quickly and provides support and measures."
