[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] A carcass of a green sea turtle, a marine protected species that had been dead for about 7 days, was found near the coastal area of Bukchon-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.
According to the Jeju Coast Guard on the 21st, at 10:19 a.m. that day, they received a report from a resident about a turtle carcass near the coastal area of Bukchon-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.
The patrol team from the Jeju Coast Guard Jeju Substation arrived at the scene around 10:24 a.m. and confirmed one turtle carcass on the nearby coastal rock.
Following this, the Jeju Coast Guard inquired with the National Marine Biodiversity Institute around 10:55 a.m., and it was estimated to be a female green sea turtle, a marine protected species, approximately 115 cm in length, 70 cm in width, and weighing about 70 kg, dead for about 7 days. There were no signs of illegal capture, and the carcass was handed over to the local government around 11 a.m.
Meanwhile, the total number of sea turtles found by the Jeju Coast Guard this year is 12, including 9 green sea turtles, 2 hawksbill sea turtles, and 1 of unknown species.
A representative of the Jeju Coast Guard said, “All sea turtles settled in Korean waters are designated as marine protected species and are protected,” and added, “If a sea turtle is caught in fishing nets while fishing at sea or if a carcass is found on the coast, please report it promptly to the Coast Guard.”
