Gwak, who earned a monthly salary of 2.33 to 3.83 million won at Hwacheon Daeyu, received '5 billion won' as severance pay
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Juhee] Professor Seomin from Dankook University strongly criticized the report that Gwak Sang-do, a member of the People Power Party, received 5 billion KRW as severance pay after his son worked at Hwacheon Daeyu Asset Management (Hwacheon Daeyu), saying, "I understand those who say they would never vote for the People Power Party even if they died."
On the 26th, Professor Seo posted on his Facebook under the title 'Sangdo, let's go for a special prosecutor,' pointing out, "When the story about his son's employment came out, they talked about a monthly salary of 2.5 million KRW, but now that the 5 billion KRW severance pay has been revealed, they say it's a legitimate performance bonus," adding, "Then they should have said so from the beginning."
Nocut News reported on the same day that it was confirmed that Gwak's son received about 5 billion KRW from Hwacheon Daeyu, which is under suspicion of preferential treatment in the Daejang-dong development project.
According to the report, Gwak, who majored in industrial design at university and urban and real estate development in graduate school, joined Hwacheon Daeyu in June 2015 and worked in the compensation team as an assistant manager until he resigned. Hwacheon Daeyu paid him 5 billion KRW as severance pay when he resigned in March of this year. Hwacheon Daeyu is known to be Gwak's first workplace.
Regarding this, Hwacheon Daeyu stated, "Since the employee resigned, it is natural to pay severance pay, and it was paid legally through internal procedures," asserting that there is no problem. Gwak himself also expressed that he does not know much about his son's work or the company and cannot be involved. However, some point out that the severance pay of 5 billion KRW is an excessively large amount compared to Gwak's career and salary.
On the same day, Gwak revealed through his father's Facebook that his monthly salary while working at Hwacheon Daeyu was 2.33 million KRW (July 2015?February 2018), 3.33 million KRW (March?September 2018), and 3.83 million KRW (October 2018?March 2021). With this level of monthly salary, the typical severance pay would be about 25 million KRW.
