[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (HCIC) will hold a personnel committee meeting on October 1 to select additional prosecutors. The HCIC plans to complete the recruitment within October and accelerate the handling of remaining cases.
On the 23rd, the HCIC announced that it will hold a personnel committee meeting on the 1st of next month to select prosecutor candidates to recommend to the President.
According to the HCIC Act, HCIC prosecutors are finally appointed by the President following recommendations from the personnel committee. The committee can recommend up to twice the number of planned appointments.
In the first recruitment of prosecutors in April, the HCIC selected 13 candidates, about half of the quota (23 people, excluding the head and deputy head). They plan to fill the remaining 10 positions (2 chief prosecutors and 8 regular prosecutors).
Earlier, on the 14th, the HCIC conducted interviews with 3 chief prosecutor applicants who passed the document screening. On the 16th and 17th, 24 regular prosecutor applicants were interviewed over two days. The HCIC expects to complete all final appointment procedures, including those at the Blue House, within October.
Meanwhile, since its launch, the HCIC is known to have registered a total of 13 cases. These include Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Cho Hee-yeon's 'unfair special recruitment of dismissed teachers,' allegations of false reporting and leakage of the meeting report between Prosecutor Lee Gyu-won and Yoon Joong-chun, allegations of indictment leakage by Seoul High Prosecutor Lee Sung-yoon, allegations of pressure in the illegal deportation investigation of Kim Hak-eui, allegations of abuse of authority by prosecutors at the Haenam branch of Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, and allegations of inadequate investigation of the Busan 'LCT' case, among others.
