[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Lee Min-jun, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea, Naju 1), announced on the 4th that he visited the farmland area around Munpyeongcheon in Naju City and urged relevant agencies to come up with solutions to the irrigation canal issues.
This visit was made by Assemblyman Lee Min-jun along with Provincial Assemblyman Choi Myung-soo and Dasi-myeon Chief Kim Seong-gi, following requests from farmers in Dasi-myeon, his electoral district, the day before.
This area suffered damage from flooding caused by the collapse of the Munpyeongcheon embankment due to heavy rainfall exceeding 400mm in August last year.
Participants, including Assemblyman Lee Min-jun, observed the site where weeds around the farmland blocked the existing earthen irrigation canals, causing poor drainage, and agreed on the necessity of expanding the drainage channels.
Assemblyman Lee Min-jun stated, “Although the embankment has been restored, farmers are demanding the expansion of drainage canals because many of the canals around the paddy fields are made of earth and are vulnerable to flooding at any time.”
He added, “Due to recent abnormal weather patterns with repeated heavy rains in summer, the number of farms suffering from flooding damage is increasing. Jeonnam Province, Naju City, and the Rural Development Administration must prioritize securing budgets to repair and improve water management facilities to prevent flooding.”
He also said, “Taking this visit as an opportunity, I will do my best to visit any place called for by local residents to examine problems and find solutions.”
