[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] On the 3rd, when the scorching heat reached its peak, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it conducted rice harvesting for new rice in Donghae Village, Bukpyeong-myeon.
This is the first rice harvest carried out in Jeollanam-do this year, using an ultra-early maturing variety cultivated for 105 days since transplanting on April 20.
The ultra-early maturing variety, which allows early shipment, does not overlap with the harvest time of regular rice, thereby distributing labor and securing the new rice market to sell at a higher price.
In particular, by planting the second crop of early maturing rice immediately after harvest in early August and harvesting it at the end of October, rice can be cultivated twice a year. Through double cropping, rice production is expected to increase by more than 900 kg per 1000㎡.
Haenam-gun is expanding the area of early rice cultivation to respond to climate change on the Korean Peninsula and to prevent damage caused by typhoons concentrated after August.
Next year, they plan to cultivate about 5 hectares of ultra-early maturing varieties suitable for double cropping, aiming to secure the high-priced new rice market.
County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan stated, “With the recent rapid rise in the Korean Peninsula’s climate and changes in consumer markets favoring premium rice, the need for early rice cultivation is increasing. Since the cultivation of ultra-early maturing rice has been successful, it is expected to greatly contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of Korean rice.”
