[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Government subsidies of 800,000 KRW per person will be provided to taxi corporation drivers whose income has decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on the 2nd that it will start the '4th Temporary Support Project for General Taxi Drivers' from the 3rd. This project is included in the government's 5th disaster relief fund and targets approximately 80,000 taxi corporation drivers affected by COVID-19. The support amount is 800,000 KRW per person, with a total budget of 64 billion KRW.

To receive the support, drivers must be affiliated with a taxi corporation whose sales have decreased due to COVID-19 or have confirmed a decrease in their own income. It must also be proven that they were employed before June 1st and have been continuously working until the 3rd. Even if there was a work gap due to contract renewal or job change during this period, if the gap is within 7 days, the requirement is considered met and the subsidy can be received.

This is the fourth time support funds have been provided to taxi corporation drivers. If all 1st to 4th support funds are received, the total amount will be 3 million KRW. Taxi corporation drivers whose sales decrease was confirmed during the 1st to 3rd support periods must submit an application to their affiliated company, which will compile and submit it to the local government. Drivers whose corporation's sales did not decrease but whose personal income decreased must submit the application directly to the local government.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor will provide detailed application methods and deadlines through local government project announcements. The ministry stated, "We will simplify administrative procedures to quickly finalize eligible recipients and aim to start payments by the end of August and complete them as much as possible before Chuseok."
