SK Chemical Commercializes Cosmetic Containers Made from Recycled Plastic Waste

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Chemicals and Woosung Platech have joined forces to produce eco-friendly cosmetic containers.

On the 2nd, SK Chemicals and Woosung Platech announced that they will commercialize eco-friendly cosmetic containers using chemical recycle materials to respond to market demand following plastic usage regulations in the domestic and international cosmetics industry. SK Chemicals will supply the 'ECOTRIA CR' material, and Woosung Platech will use it to produce high-transparency cosmetic containers.

Reducing and recycling plastic waste is an urgent task for all countries, including Europe. For this reason, global cosmetics companies such as L’Or?al, Est?e Lauder, and Chanel are actively engaging in plastic recycling and the use of eco-friendly packaging materials. L’Or?al plans to switch the plastics used in product packaging to recycled or bio-based materials by 2025 and achieve 100% conversion by 2030.

Chemical recycling is a technology that decomposes waste plastics back into pure raw materials to manufacture polymer plastics. In particular, the 'ECOTRIA® Claro' product is classified as PET, the number 1 international plastic resin identification code, and can be recycled back into PET after use, attracting significant interest in overseas markets.

Woosung Platech is a global cosmetic container manufacturer producing 500 million plastic containers annually. Woosung Platech holds patents for the 'method of manufacturing PET cosmetic containers as a substitute for transparent glass' and plastic processing technology. Using this technology with ECOTRIA® Claro, they plan to produce cosmetic containers with excellent chemical resistance and glass-like high transparency even at 8mm thickness.

SK Chemicals completed the expansion of new copolyester (PETG) production facilities at its Ulsan plant over the past three years and began commercial production in July. SK Chemicals will start full-scale commercial production of chemical recycle copolyester 'ECOTRIA CR' from September and plans to increase the sales ratio of recycled products to 50% by 2025 and 100% by 2030.

Kim Eung-soo, head of SK Chemicals’ Copolyester Division, said, "We will strive to achieve 100% sales of the new facilities as soon as possible through a high value-added specialty market strategy," adding, "We plan to strengthen our ESG management system by expanding sales of eco-friendly materials such as chemical recycle copolyester."
