Artificial Intelligence to Be Deployed at Ulsan Port... Ulsan City and Consortium to Invest 43 Billion KRW by 2024 for Maritime Transport Platform Innovation Ulsan City Hall.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Ulsan City has decided to introduce advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems into the shipbuilding and shipping industries.

On the 1st, Ulsan City announced that it will start a project in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and ICT for the "AI-based Heavy Cargo Mobility Logistics Platform Demonstration Project" aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding and shipping industries.

The project’s goal is to demonstrate a roll-on/roll-off (a new shipping logistics service incorporating AI technology) system on dry bulk cargo (such as iron ore and grains) transport vessels, which account for 51.6% of the total global shipping cargo volume.

The AI system will monitor the entire shipping logistics process in real-time based on maritime transport data shared between cargo suppliers and demand companies, supporting optimal ship navigation route setting and collision avoidance.

The current cargo transport process is inefficient due to manual communication methods such as phone calls. Utilizing the AI system is expected to greatly improve efficiency, generating an induced production amount of 71.2 billion KRW and an induced added value of 35.2 billion KRW.

Additionally, the project will simultaneously promote the integrated electrification and localization of navigation communication equipment on actual vessels, enhancing domestic technological competitiveness alongside digital transformation. Equipping 2,300 ships to be ordered over the next 10 years with domestically produced equipment is expected to generate an additional 700 billion KRW in sales.

The project will invest a total of 43 billion KRW by 2024 and will be carried out by a consortium of industry, academia, research, and government centered on the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) and the Shipbuilding and Marine ICT Convergence Center, including Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ilsin Shipping, POSCO, and Hyundai Global Service.

Mayor Song Cheol-ho stated, "Through information and communication technology, we can innovate the existing transportation system of small and medium-sized shipping industries and establish a new growth foundation that meets the industrial paradigm." He added, "We will continuously support the shipping and shipbuilding industries and actively cooperate with the industry to develop new growth models so that convergence technologies can expand on-site."
