[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The Ministry of Education is reported to have proposed excluding 'academic background' from the grounds for discrimination prohibited under the Anti-Discrimination Act.

According to Justice Party lawmaker Jang Hye-young on the 27th, the Ministry of Education recently submitted a review opinion on the Anti-Discrimination Act to the National Assembly's Judiciary Committee, suggesting an amendment to exclude 'academic background' from the types of prohibited discrimination.

The Ministry of Education stated, "Academic background, unlike gender, age, nationality, or disability, which are typically determined innately, largely varies depending on an individual's choices and efforts, and is often seen as a reasonable basis for differentiation," adding, "In a situation where the use of standardized indicators to measure an individual's ability instead of academic background is not yet widespread, regulating discrimination based on academic background by law could be seen as excessive regulation."
