Efforts to Establish a Bird-Specialized Park with Simultaneous Expert Monitoring Amid Increasing Wild Bird Populations
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government's Hangang Project Headquarters announced on the 20th that it will operate summer ecological programs at Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park, a habitat suitable for wild birds and a stopover for migratory birds.
Established in July 2002, Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park is one of Seoul's 30 ecological tourism attractions. It restores the wetland ecosystem, purifies the river, and attracts various life forms, including endangered species.
This ecological program offers observation and experience activities for infants and families. Participants can observe the habitats of summer migratory birds that arrive during the breeding season, take a walk along the willow forest trail in Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park, and appreciate the flora and fauna up close, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature.
The representative program is "Birds of Gangseo Wetland," which allows participants to observe the ecology of wild birds. During the summer months (June to July), when the greenery deepens and the heat begins, the program titled "Summer Migratory Birds! Thank You for Returning~" focuses on observing migratory birds visiting Gangseo Wetland. Visitors can encounter various bird species, including the white-browed tit-warbler, a species of conservation concern, as well as the oriole, bluebird, cuckoo, and spotted flycatcher.
Additionally, there is a four-season nature observation program called "Ecological Exploration Along the Willow Forest Trail," which introduces the plants and animals encountered while walking through the willow forest trail of Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park. For groups, the "Gangseo Wetland Infant Ecological Classroom" offers children opportunities to experience nature observation and ecological play to foster familiarity with the natural environment.
Meanwhile, as the ecological value of Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park increases with the growing number of wild birds visiting, the headquarters is also conducting "Wild Bird Expert Monitoring" to observe the habitat and breeding status of wild birds.
Kim Sang-guk, head of the park division at the Hangang Project Headquarters, said, "Gangseo Hangang Park is a specialized Hangang park where the ecology of birds can be observed," adding, "We will continue meaningful programs that reflect the characteristics of Hangang Park."
