[Asia Economy Reporter Ji-hwan Park] A man in his 50s and a woman in her 60s who received the AstraZeneca (AZ) COVID-19 vaccine have died, and the police and health authorities are investigating the cause of death.

According to the police and health authorities on the 12th, a man in his 50s living in Iksan, Jeonbuk, died one day after receiving the AZ vaccine. The man received the AZ leftover vaccine at a hospital in Mohyeon-dong, Iksan City, around 2 p.m. on the 10th. He passed away around 9 p.m. the next day, the 11th.

The bereaved family stated that the man showed no abnormal symptoms on the day he was vaccinated, and the next morning he experienced mild symptoms such as arm numbness and headache, but these were symptoms within the range explained by the hospital, so he went to work as usual. Later, around 2 p.m., he developed a high fever of 37.8 degrees Celsius and his symptoms worsened, so he left work early. After dinner at home, he fell asleep and then lost consciousness.

At the time of death, the man showed paralysis symptoms with his right arm stretched above his head. Although he was taking medication for hyperlipidemia, he was known to be healthy without underlying conditions such as hypertension or diabetes.

In Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk, a woman in her 60s who received the AZ vaccine was found dead three days later. According to Gyeongbuk Province, the woman was found dead at her home around 2 p.m. on the 11th by an acquaintance who reported it to the police. The police stated that the woman had been taking medication for hypertension and diabetes, and CCTV footage confirmed that she moved around her home area on the morning of the day she died.

The police and health authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between their deaths and the vaccine.
