[On-site Video] "Do You Know Martyr Lee Han-yeol?" Asked the 'MZ Generation'

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon, PD Yoon Jin-geun] "He participated in the democratization movement and attended Yonsei University," "I also saw it in a movie."

On the 9th, marking the 34th anniversary of the 'June 10 Democratic Uprising,' the life of the late martyr Lee Han-yeol is drawing attention. Lee was hit by a tear gas canister fired by riot police during the 'Yonsei Students' Resolution Rally for the June 10 Demonstration' in 1987 and died 27 days later. His funeral was held as a national democratic funeral attended by 1.6 million people nationwide. Lee's death became the catalyst for the June 10 Uprising and the June 29 Declaration. On this day, young people in their 20s and 30s met at a university and emphasized that without his dedication, the current democracy would not exist.

A university student A (20), met near Dongguk University in Pil-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, said about Lee Han-yeol, "I learned about him through textbooks. I also got to know him through movies," adding, "He is famous for being hit by tear gas during the 1987 democratization movement and being taken away, and without him, Korean democracy would not exist."

Graduate student B (27) said, "I know Lee Han-yeol," emphasizing, "He is known as someone who made great sacrifices for the democratization movement."

Also, university student C (23) said, "Lee Han-yeol was very active in the democratization movement during his school days," adding, "I saw scenes reenacting him being hit by tear gas and having his shoes taken off as a form of tribute. I think people can empathize with him for having attended a good university and participated in student activism."

Meanwhile, at the 34th memorial ceremony for Lee Han-yeol held at the Lee Han-yeol Hill in Yonsei University, Seodaemun-gu, his mother Bae Eun-sim, Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil, and other attendees sang the 'March for the Beloved' to honor Lee’s noble sacrifice dedicated to democracy.
