[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Junsung) announced on the 21st that from the 26th to June 25th, farmers can subscribe to the 'Rice Crop Disaster Insurance' through local agricultural cooperatives.
The rice crop disaster insurance covers damages caused by natural disasters such as typhoons, strong winds, and heavy rains, as well as damage from birds and beasts, and fires. Through special contracts, it also broadly covers diseases and pests such as rice blast, rice planthoppers, and brown planthoppers.
Since 2017, the insurance premium support rate has been expanded to 90% to reduce the burden on farmers and allow more farmers to benefit, with farmers' self-payment reduced to 10%, promoting the crop disaster insurance support project.
However, subscriptions for chili pepper crop disaster insurance are available until the 21st of next month.
Last year, the county enrolled 8,975 hectares of paddy fields, and due to abnormal weather such as typhoons, strong winds, and heavy rains, a total of 7.7 billion KRW in insurance payments were made, with an average of 3.5 million KRW paid to affected farmers, helping stabilize their management.
A county official stated, "Farmers have faced difficulties due to continuous natural disasters over the past two years, and if disasters cannot be avoided, they should prepare by subscribing to crop disaster insurance," adding, "We will do our best to encourage more farmers to subscribe to crop disaster insurance."
