List of Construction Companies, Ordering Agencies, and Local Governments with Fatal Accidents in Q1 Released
10 Major Construction Companies, 12 Ordering Agencies, 29 Cities/Counties/Districts
[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] In the first quarter of this year, 14 fatal accidents occurred at 10 of the top 100 construction companies. The construction company with the highest number of fatal accidents was Taeyoung Construction, and the client was Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 21st the list of the top 100 construction companies by construction capability evaluation, clients, and local governments where fatal accidents occurred during the first quarter of this year.
The large construction company with the most fatalities was Taeyoung Construction, where a total of 3 construction workers died during the period. Accidents involving workers being struck by heavy objects occurred consecutively at the “Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town 3BL Section and S-5BL Section Apartment Construction” site on January 20 and February 27, each resulting in one death. On March 9, at the “Guri Galmae Knowledge Industry Center New Construction” site, one person died due to a collision with vehicle parts caused by damage to a construction vehicle (pump car).
Following that, Samsung C&T and DL Construction each had 2 fatalities, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, GS Engineering & Construction, Daewoo Construction Co., Ltd., Lotte Construction Co., Ltd., Halla Corporation, Geumgang Housing Co., Ltd., and Yangwoo Construction Co., Ltd. each had 1 fatality.
The client with the most fatal accidents was Korea Land and Housing Corporation, with 2 deaths. One fatality each occurred at the National Railroad Corporation, Gangneung Eco Power, Korea Forest Service, Nam-gu of Ulsan City, Wonju City, Korea Rural Community Corporation, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea Water Resources Corporation, Haenam County, Hongseong County, and Hwasun County.
The local government with the most fatalities was Gyeonggi Province, with 2 deaths in Hwaseong City, and one death each in Suwon City, Gwacheon City, Siheung City, Bucheon City, Pyeongtaek City, Giheung District, Seongnam City, Guri City, Paju City, and Uijeongbu City, totaling 12 deaths. In Incheon Metropolitan City, there were 4 deaths in total, with one each in Seo-gu, Free Economic Zone Authority, Michuhol-gu, and Namdong-gu. In Chungcheongnam-do, there were 3 fatal accidents in total, with one each in Seosan City, Seocheon County, and Yesan County.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to conduct special inspections by June on the 10 large construction companies where fatal accidents occurred to promote systematic safety management and raise awareness about fatal accidents.
Additionally, the Ministry announced that from February to March this year, special and surprise inspections were conducted on 131 construction sites of large construction companies that had fatal accidents in the fourth quarter of last year, resulting in the detection of a total of 150 improper cases. Penalties for violations such as poor quality testing will be imposed by the local land management offices after administrative procedures such as appeals.
Lee Sang-joo, Director of Technical Safety Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "Construction participants must make greater efforts to promote safety culture on site and reduce fatal accidents," adding, "From the second quarter, to strengthen safety management by construction entities, we plan to expand disclosure and conduct special inspections not only on the top 100 construction companies but also on subcontractors responsible for fatal accidents."
