[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 16th that it will operate local surveillance officers to effectively respond to illegal dumping and burning of waste.
In the past three years, the illegal dumping (burning) rate in Gimhae City has increased by 21%. Illegal dumping of garbage, unrecycled recyclables, and food waste in vacant lots in eup/myeon areas, densely populated villa and one-room areas in urban districts, and alleyways has caused not only aesthetic deterioration but also persistent complaints due to foul odors.
Illegal dumping and burning often occur during early morning or late-night hours when enforcement is weak, making it difficult for enforcement officers to monitor. Therefore, the city selects residents living in the affected areas who are familiar with local conditions as surveillance officers to maximize the efficiency of monitoring and enforcement against illegal dumping.
An official from the Gimhae City Cleaning Administration Department said, "The 13 newly selected local surveillance officers will focus on monitoring 11 eup, myeon, and dong areas where illegal dumping frequently occurs," adding, "We will prevent illegal dumping from taking root through strong enforcement and guidance."
Meanwhile, earlier this year, the city additionally installed surveillance cameras at 20 locations with severe illegal dumping and put up guidance banners and warning signs. The city plans to continue to respond strongly and decisively to illegal waste dumping in the future.
