[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] K Auction announced on the 15th that it will hold its April auction at 4 p.m. on the 28th at its headquarters in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
This auction features 186 works valued at approximately 18 billion KRW. The highest-priced work is Lee Ufan's 1980 piece "From Point," estimated at 1.5 to 2 billion KRW. Following are Kim Whanki's "Sanwol" estimated at 1.5 to 2 billion KRW, Park Seo-bo's 1985 work "Myobeop No. 213-85" estimated at 1.1 to 1.3 billion KRW, and Ed Ruscha's "Plants, Pole" estimated at 700 million to 1.2 billion KRW.
Works by Kim Chang-yeol, whose prices have been steadily rising since his passing earlier this year, include 12 pieces from the 1970s to the 2000s, valued at about 900 million KRW.
Lee Ufan's works, including the Point, Line, Wind series, Jo-eung, and Dialogue pieces, total 15 works valued at approximately 4.3 billion KRW.
Park Seo-bo's works currently exhibited at White Cube in London, UK, include four pieces up for auction: the 100-ho "Myobeop No. 213-85," small works sized 1-ho and 6-ho, and the 25-ho piece "Myobeop No. 120402."
Additionally, six works by Jung Sang-hwa, three by Yoon Hyung-geun, and four by Ha Jong-hyun?totaling 17 works by four masters of Dansaekhwa?are expected to heat up the auction with a combined value of 3.5 billion KRW.
Kim Whanki's 1957 work "Sanwol" will start bidding at 1.2 billion KRW (estimated 1.2 to 2.2 billion KRW). Two works by Yoo Youngkuk, regarded alongside Kim Whanki as pioneers of Korean abstract art, are also featured, drawing attention. Works by first-generation major Korean figurative artists such as Park Soo-keun, Chun Kyung-ja, Jang Uk-jin, and Lee Dae-won, as well as their successors including Kim Jong-hak, Lee Wal-jong, Oh Chi-kyun, and Ko Young-hoon, will also be exhibited.
In overseas art, 11 works by Yayoi Kusama, including original acrylic paintings on canvas and various editioned works, will be presented. Works by Ed Ruscha, Carl Andre, and Billy Childish?artists rarely seen in Korea?will also be introduced.
Other featured works include Robert Indiana's "Hope," Roy Lichtenstein's prints, Pablo Picasso's lithographs, Auguste Rodin's bronze works, KAWS prints, Robert Combas sculptures, and editioned works by David Hockney, Julian Opie, Frank Stella, Jonas Wood, and Nina Chanel Abney.
In the Korean painting and antiques section, folk paintings such as "The Twelve Zodiac Animals," "Birds and Flowers," and "Chaekgado" will be displayed, along with ceramics including "Baekja Vase," "Baekja Blue-and-White Cloud and Dragon Vase," and "Baekja Blue-and-White Cloud and Phoenix Vase," as well as wooden furniture like three-tier tables, bandaji chests, and uigeol chests.
The auction items can be viewed at the K Auction exhibition hall from the 17th until the auction day on the 28th.
