The CosmoCos R&D Center announced that, through joint research with Professor Jinwoong Kim's research team from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University and the University of Illinois, they have developed a novel moisture bio-formulation technology that effectively maintains moisture in the skin and scalp.
Skin hydration, a crucial function for anti-aging, if neglected, can lead to skin dryness and abnormal keratinization of the stratum corneum, which accelerates aging. Cosmetics have used various moisturizing ingredients to provide hydration for the skin and scalp, but existing materials have limitations in maintaining skin moisture.
Biocellulose Nanofibrils (BCNF) are applied in various practical biomedical fields including wound dressings, bone grafts, and tissue regeneration. Despite these advantages, systematic research on cellulose-based bioadhesion has been lacking. This study confirmed that by linking BCNF with cell penetrating peptides (CPP), a robust biocompatible thin film can be formed on the skin, physically blocking moisture loss from the skin and scalp.
The research results have been patented (Application No. 10-2019-0050272), and the related paper was published in the May issue of this year in the international journal International Journal of Pharmaceutics, volume 600 (Fabrication of cell penetrating peptide-conjugated bacterial cellulose nanofibrils with remarkable skin adhesion and water retention performance).
Jang Kyunghee, head of the CosmoCos R&D Center, stated, "With the publication of this paper, we have secured groundbreaking foundational technology for moisture supply and retention not only for the skin but also for the scalp. Building on this, the CosmoCos R&D Center will do its best to develop innovative products for customers by researching various materials and foundational technologies through broad open innovation."
