[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jeonnam Provincial Council announced on the 9th that it will operate the ‘2021 First Half Youth Assembly Classroom’ online.
The Youth Assembly Classroom will be held from today until July 8, targeting about 850 students from 28 elementary, middle, high, and special schools in the province.
It was prepared to help local youth better understand the functions and roles of local councils and to cultivate democratic citizenship awareness.
In the Youth Assembly Classroom, young people, the future leaders, are appointed as ‘One-day Provincial Assembly Members’ and directly experience the democratic decision-making process through a mock assembly (member oath, ordinance drafting, 3-minute free speech, etc.).
On this day, 29 student executives from 14 elementary schools in Damyang-gun started with an online meeting with Park Jong-won, a local assembly member, and adopted the agenda of the ‘Ordinance on Installing CCTV in Schools,’ experiencing the assembly process such as debate for and against and voting, similar to a plenary session.
They also experienced an assembly-related quiz program that satisfies both fun and learning effects.
Chairman Kim Han-jong said, “Since the spread of COVID-19 is still ongoing and the situation is severe, the first half will be operated online, and the second half will be operated face-to-face depending on the COVID-19 situation. I hope that local youth will broaden their understanding of the Provincial Council and local autonomy through this assembly classroom and grow into excellent democratic citizens.”
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Provincial Council has been operating the assembly classroom for local youth since 2009, with 13,237 participants from 618 schools so far. In 2019, it was selected as an ‘Education Donation Career Experience Certified Institution’ by the Ministry of Education.
