[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 5th that the 'Gaya Tumuli' World Heritage nomination dossier, submitted last January with the goal of inscription in 2022, has passed the completeness check by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is the secretariat responsible for managing the World Heritage Committee, which makes decisions on World Heritage inscriptions and monitors conservation status, as well as the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention. The completeness check that was passed this time is a process in which the UNESCO World Heritage Centre reviews whether the submitted nomination dossier meets the formal requirements. Once this check is passed, the full World Heritage inscription evaluation process proceeds.
According to Operational Guidelines Article 140 for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, nomination dossiers that pass the completeness check by the World Heritage Centre undergo document review by advisory bodies, on-site inspections, and two rounds of comprehensive discussions from March of that year through the first half of the following year.
The Cultural Heritage Administration expects that the inscription decision for the 'Gaya Tumuli' will be made at the 46th World Heritage Committee meeting scheduled for July 2022, after going through various procedures starting this month. However, the schedule may be adjusted depending on the global COVID-19 situation.
A Cultural Heritage Administration official stated, "We will do our best throughout the evaluation process together with the Gaya Tumuli World Heritage Promotion Team and the relevant local governments to achieve World Heritage inscription."
