According to the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery Management Office (Director Yoo Hyung-sun), the late Kim Cheon-bae served as a May 18 Relief Committee member in May 1980 and participated in the "March of Death" on the 26th.
With his fluent foreign language skills, Kim contributed to accurately conveying the truth of the May 18 tragedy to foreign journalists. Due to this interview, he was wanted and lived in hiding but was arrested in September 1981 and served time in prison.
An official from the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery Management Office stated, "The late Kim Cheon-bae rests at Plot 6-83 in Cemetery Area 1, and anyone visiting the democratic cemetery can pay their respects at any time. As a national cemetery open to all citizens, we will continue to work hard to honor and remember those who sacrificed for our country's democracy."
Meanwhile, the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery Management Office selects and announces the May 18 Democratic Merit Person of the Month every month to reexamine the noble sacrifices and contributions of the May 18 democratic activists and to promote the value of the May 18 Democratic Movement both domestically and internationally.
