When Replacing Old Boilers with Eco-Friendly Boilers, General Households Receive 200,000 KRW, Low-Income Families 600,000 KRW... Approximately 2,500 Units Supported on a First-Come, First-Served Basis, Contributing to Economic Relief and Air Quality Improvement
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is providing subsidies for eco-friendly boilers for households that can simultaneously reduce the burden of heating costs in winter and concerns about fine dust.
An eco-friendly boiler is a product certified by the Environmental Industry Technology Institute’s environmental label, which has higher thermal efficiency than regular boilers and reduces fine dust emissions to about 1/8 of the usual level.
The support target is homeowners of residences located in Gwanak-gu (including single-family houses, multi-family houses, multiplex houses, apartments, etc.) who replace boilers that are over 10 years old as of January 1, 2021, with eco-friendly boilers. Public facilities, new constructions, and commercial use are excluded.
General households receive 200,000 KRW per unit, and low-income households receive 600,000 KRW per unit. The supply for the first half of this year is about 2,500 units and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis until the budget is exhausted.
Also, since last year, the subsidy payment target has changed from the purchaser (individual) to the supplier (business), and the application procedure has changed from applying after boiler installation to applying before installation, making it easier to apply for the subsidy.
To apply, applicants must prepare documents such as the eco-friendly boiler installation confirmation, contract (estimate), and subsidy payment request form, and submit them in person or by mail to Gwanak-gu Office (Green Environment Division).
Meanwhile, throughout Seoul, since April 3 of last year, under the Special Act on Air Quality Improvement in Air Quality Control Zones (abbreviated as Air Quality Control Zone Act), only eco-friendly boilers certified as Type 1 can be newly installed or replaced. Installation of Type 2 certified boilers is only allowed if it is impossible to install Type 1 boilers due to difficulties securing drainage or exhaust outlets.
Mayor Park Junhee said, “Due to consecutive cold waves, the demand for boiler replacement is expected to increase, so households planning to replace old boilers should apply quickly. We hope that replacing and installing eco-friendly boilers will reduce economic burdens and contribute to improving air quality.”
