Thorough Snow Removal, Adjusted Commute Times, and Increased Public Transportation: Special Directives
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] A heavy snow advisory has been issued for the Seoul metropolitan area and southern Yeongseo region of Gangwon Province, with snow flurries occurring in some areas. In response, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) raised its emergency response level to Level 2 as of 8 p.m. on the 17th.
The CDSCH had been operating at emergency Level 1 since the afternoon of the same day, but due to the expectation of heavier snowfall nationwide from night through early morning on the 18th, it took this preemptive measure.
Jeon Hae-cheol, head of the CDSCH, stated, "With snowfall forecasted late at night and in the early morning, there are concerns about traffic congestion and accidents. Therefore, thorough safety measures such as pre-application of de-icing agents must be implemented." He also instructed, "Prepare plans to increase public transportation during commuting hours and adjust work start times at administrative and public institutions to prevent traffic congestion."
The CDSCH also urged related ministries and local governments to strengthen their own emergency work systems and to mobilize all available resources to minimize public inconvenience and damage through thorough response efforts.
