[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Korea on the 16th was in the high 500s. The 'third wave' is showing a gradual decline.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight, there were 580 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 71,820. This is an increase of 67 cases from the previous day (513), but the number has remained in the 500s for five consecutive days.
Until last month, the number of new confirmed cases fluctuated around 1,000, but since the new year, it has gradually decreased, dropping to the mid-400s on the 11th (451 cases). Recently, however, it has slightly increased again, reaching the 500s. Of the new cases reported on this day, 547 were locally transmitted and 33 were imported.
The third wave, which began in earnest in mid-November last year, peaked on the 25th of last month with 1,240 cases and has been on a downward trend since.
Since the beginning of this month, the daily new confirmed cases have been 1,027 → 820 → 657 → 1,020 → 714 → 838 → 869 → 674 → 641 → 657 → 451 → 537 → 561 → 524 → 513 → 580, maintaining below 1,000 except for two days.
In the past week, there was one day in the 400s, five days in the 500s, and one day in the 600s.
