Marie Curie Wins Grand Prize at the 5th Korea Musical Awards... Leading Actor and Actress Awards Go to Kang Pil-seok and Kim Su-ha

[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The grand prize at the 5th Korean Musical Awards went to the musical "Marie Curie," which highlights the life of the female scientist Marie Curie. The Best Actor and Actress awards were given to Kang Pil-seok for the musical "Something Rotten" and Kim Su-ha for "Rent," respectively.

"Marie Curie" is a work that sheds light on the life of Marie Curie, who overcame social prejudices as a woman and immigrant, portraying the story of a female scientist's growth and triumph as she faced fear and confronted the world with confidence. After a tryout performance in December 2018, it premiered at the Chungmu Art Center in February this year. Last year, it was revived at the Hongik University Art Center in Daehangno. The original musical "Marie Curie" has shown increasing completeness through its tryout, premiere, and revival performances, ultimately winning the grand prize at the 5th Korean Musical Awards, beating out "Gwangju," "Baekbeom," and "Little Women."

The 5th Korean Musical Awards ceremony was held on the 11th at the Blue Square Interpark Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the ceremony was held without an audience, unlike previous years. The event was broadcast live on Naver TV.

The honors for Best Actor and Actress went to Kang Pil-seok and Kim Su-ha. Kang Pil-seok gave a passionate performance as Nick Bottom in the musical "Something Rotten," while Kim Su-ha played Mimi in "Rent."

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Seo Kyung-soo for his role as Shakespeare in "Something Rotten," and the Best Supporting Actress award was given to Lee Bom-so-ri for her role as Chami in "Chami." The Rookie Awards were presented to Lee Jun-young for "Swag Age: Outcry, Joseon!" and Han Jae-ah for "Maybe Happy Ending," respectively.

In the acting category, "Something Rotten," which won both Best Actor and Supporting Actor awards, stood out, while in the creative category, the musical "Marie Curie," which won the grand prize, was prominent.

"Marie Curie" received awards for Best Direction (Director Kim Tae-hyung), Best Script (Writer Cheon Se-eun), and Best Music Composition (Composer Choi Jong-yoon). The Producer Award went to Kang Byung-won, CEO of Live, who produced "Marie Curie," "Gwangju," and "Fan Letter." The Best Arrangement and Music Director award was given to Kim Sung-soo, music director of "Something Rotten." The Best Choreography award went to Kim Eun-chong for "Swag Age: Outcry, Joseon!"

The Best Production Award for theaters with over 400 seats went to "Swag Age: Outcry, Joseon!," and for theaters with fewer than 400 seats, it went to "Lizzie."

The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to "The Musical," a musical magazine that has documented the history of the Korean musical industry for 20 years since its founding in 2000. "The Musical" decided to suspend publication indefinitely after its December issue last year. The Ensemble Award was given to the team of "Broadway 42nd Street."
