[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Sampyo Group is attracting attention by carrying out social contribution activities that leverage the characteristics of a construction basic materials specialized company.
On the 2nd, Sampyo Group delivered eight Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) benches, produced in collaboration with Amorepacific and Decrete (a UHPC design company), to the Jongno District Office in Seoul. The delivery ceremony held at the Jongno District Office was attended by Kim Young-jong, Mayor of Jongno District, Lee Seok-hong, Vice President of Sampyo Group R&D Innovation Center, Lee Hee-bok, Executive Director of Amorepacific, and Shim Hyung-joon, CEO of Decrete.
The benches will be installed in parks within the Jongno district, each featuring a donation plaque engraved with the corporate identity (CI) of the participating companies.
The bench donation was made possible through the collaboration of companies that sympathized with Jongno District’s ongoing 'Bench More Placement Project.' Since August, Jongno District has been increasing the number of seats in the area in response to the growing need for non-face-to-face resting spaces in the city due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
Jongno District’s Bench More Placement Project is being promoted in two ways: a 'donation type' through voluntary participation by companies and citizens, and a 'public type' conducted by each department of the district office. The official name of the bench is abbreviated as 'Your Seat,' meaning "a chair you donate and use, a comfortable resting space for your neighbors (you)."
Sampyo Group plans to promote the UHPC bench donation project as a mid- to long-term social contribution activity over three years (2020?2022), starting this year, rather than as a one-time event.
Kim Young-jong, Mayor of Jongno District, said, "The UHPC benches completed through the collaboration of three companies including Sampyo Group are expected to be loved as resting and healing spaces for citizens," and added, "I would like to express my gratitude to the company officials who participated in the production for the bench donation."
Lee Seok-hong, Vice President of Sampyo Group R&D Innovation Center, said, "UHPC can create various shapes and express desired colors and textures, which is why it was used as the bench material," and added, "I hope the UHPC benches will help citizens’ rest and healing even a little."
The benches donated this time were made using UHPC and plastic cosmetic containers donated by Sampyo Group and Amorepacific respectively, while Decrete was responsible for designing and producing the benches using these materials.
In particular, Sampyo Group has also started research to expand the use of UHPC, which has so far been limited to civil engineering structures such as ultra-high-rise buildings and bridges, at the Sampyo Technology Research Institute located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, for this project. UHPC has advantages such as strength up to 10 times that of ordinary concrete, high fluidity, and the ability to withstand high loads with less material, enabling the lightweight construction of structures.
The Sampyo Group Social Contribution Team stated, "As buildings reflecting durability and unique design gain attention, the utilization of UHPC is expected to increase further," and added, "We will continue to fulfill our corporate social responsibility through diverse social contribution activities that actively utilize the group’s strengths and products."
