Incheon Songdo International City Library International Design Competition... Scheduled for Completion in 2023

Public Contest from the 25th, Winning Works Selected in March Next Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Yeonsu-gu, Incheon is conducting an international design competition for the construction of the Songdo International City Library.

The library, to be built on site 115-2, Songdo-dong, will be constructed with a total project cost of 39.5 billion KRW, on a 9,427㎡ site with a total floor area of 8,000㎡. The design will be completed by December next year, followed by the start of construction, with completion scheduled for November 2023.

The district is inviting participation not only from domestic but also international architects to select an excellent design with a global sensibility through the international design competition. Registration for participation will be accepted until the 31st of next month, with submissions and main judging taking place in February next year, and the final winner selected in March.

The first-place winner will be granted the priority negotiation rights for the basic and detailed design of the library, while the second-place entry will receive 50 million KRW, the third-place 30 million KRW, and two fourth-place entries will each receive 10 million KRW as compensation.

The competition jury consists of five domestic and international experts, with a particular emphasis on increasing the proportion of foreign jurors to ensure fairness in judging.

Domestic jurors include Professor Eun-sik Lee of Kyung Hee University and Jae-yong Lim, CEO of OCA Architects, while international jurors include John Enright (USA, Griffin Enright Architects), Louis Becer (Denmark, Henning Larsen Architects), and Robert Greenwood (Norway, Snohetta).

Go Nam-seok, Mayor of Yeonsu-gu, stated, "Through the international design competition for the Songdo International City Library, we will do our best to select a creative and excellent design plan so that it can become a new landmark of the region."
