[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A public opinion poll showed that Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, who was ranked first in the preference survey for the next presidential candidate, dropped to third place just two days later.
Korea Gallup announced on the 13th that in a survey conducted from the 10th to the 12th among 1,001 people nationwide aged 18 and over, when asked who they thought was suitable as the next president, Prosecutor General Yoon ranked third with an 11% preference, following Lee Nak-yeon, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Lee Jae-myung, governor of Gyeonggi Province, who recorded 19% preference each. Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, was surveyed at 3%, and Hong Joon-pyo, an independent lawmaker, at 1%.
Compared to a month ago, Lee Nak-yeon’s preference rose by 2 percentage points, Prosecutor General Yoon’s by 8 percentage points, while Lee Jae-myung, Ahn Cheol-soo, and Hong Joon-pyo each fell by 1 percentage point.
This result shows a significant difference from the survey results announced by Hangil Research on the 11th. At that time, Hangil Research’s survey showed Yoon’s support at 24.7%, the highest, followed by Lee Nak-yeon and Lee Jae-myung at 22.2% and 18.4%, respectively. In just two days, Yoon’s preference dropped by two ranks.
This is analyzed to be due to differences in survey methods between Hangil Research and Gallup. Hangil Research’s survey presented only six candidates?Sim Sang-jung, Ahn Cheol-soo, Yoon Seok-yeol, Lee Nak-yeon, Lee Jae-myung, and Hong Joon-pyo?while Gallup conducted the survey by asking for free responses without naming candidates. Because of this, some pointed out that Hangil Research’s survey might cause a concentration of support among opposition party supporters.
Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in’s approval rating for his administration rose by 3 percentage points from the previous week to 46%. Negative evaluations fell by 2 percentage points to 45%.
Party support rates were 39% for the Democratic Party, 18% for the People Power Party, 7% for the Justice Party, and 3% each for the People’s Party and the Open Democratic Party. Compared to the previous week, support for the People Power Party dropped by 2 percentage points, while the Justice Party rose by 1 percentage point.
This survey contacted 6,047 adults aged 18 and over nationwide, with a final 1,001 respondents completing the survey, recording a 17% response rate. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. For more details, refer to the Central Election Survey Deliberation Commission website.
